Karate-Jutsu (Muteki MMA)

At Phoenix Martial Arts Academy, we believe martial arts training should build more than just fighting ability — it should build confident, disciplined, capable people.

Muteki MMA is a complete martial arts academy that blends traditional martial arts values with modern combat sports training. Our programs combine striking, grappling, self-defense, fitness, and character development into a structured system designed for children, teens, and adults of all experience levels.

Our training includes influences from:

  • Traditional Japanese Karate
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi & No-Gi)
  • Judo
  • Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW)
  • Kickboxing
  • Self-Defense & MMA training

What makes Muteki MMA different is our focus on practical skill development, personal growth, and community. We are not just a competition gym and not just a traditional dojo — we combine the discipline and respect of traditional martial arts with the effectiveness and realism of modern training methods.

For children, our classes focus heavily on:

  • Confidence
  • Self-control
  • Respect
  • Leadership
  • Anti-bullying skills
  • Social development

For teens and adults, training focuses on:

  • Functional self-defense
  • Fitness and conditioning
  • Technical martial arts skill
  • Stress relief
  • Mental toughness
  • Personal achievement

Whether someone wants to compete, learn self-defense, improve fitness, or simply become more confident, Muteki MMA provides a welcoming, family-friendly environment where students can grow at their own pace.

“Muteki” means “Indomitable Spirit" representing the mindset we strive to develop in every student: resilient, disciplined, and prepared to overcome challenges both on and off the mats.

Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW)

What Is Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW)?

Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW) is a modern martial arts system created by Erik Paulson that combines the most effective elements of grappling, catch wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Shooto, Muay Thai, and mixed martial arts into one complete combat system.

Originally developed for MMA competition and real-world fighting application, CSW focuses on blending striking, clinch work, takedowns, submissions, and positional control into a seamless fighting style. Rather than treating each range of combat separately, CSW teaches students how to transition fluidly between standing, clinch, and ground fighting.

A major emphasis of CSW is:

  • Control before submission
  • Flow and transitions
  • Functional technique under pressure
  • Adaptability against resisting opponents
  • Submission chains and counters
  • Catch wrestling style rides, pins, and neck cranks
  • Leg locks and submission grappling

Training often includes:

  • Takedowns and throws
  • Clinch fighting
  • Joint locks and chokes
  • Ground control and escapes
  • Striking integration
  • MMA-style positional awareness
  • Reaction and sensitivity drills

What makes CSW unique is its blend of traditional grappling concepts with modern MMA efficiency. The system encourages creativity, timing, and technical adaptability rather than relying purely on strength or athleticism.

At Phoenix Martial Arts Academy, CSW training helps students develop:

  • Realistic self-defense skills
  • Advanced grappling ability
  • Better transitions between ranges
  • Increased body awareness and coordination
  • Conditioning and mental toughness

CSW is widely respected in the MMA and grappling world because of its practical effectiveness and because many high-level fighters and instructors have trained under Erik Paulson and his coaching lineage.

Combat Submission Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

What Is Combat Submission Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (CSBJJ)?

Combat Submission Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (CSBJJ) is a modernized, hybrid approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that emphasizes practical submission grappling for both sport performance and real-world application.

While traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is primarily focused on positional control and submissions within a sport rule set, CSBJJ expands on that foundation by integrating a broader range of techniques and training methods drawn from MMA and catch-style grappling systems.

At its core, CSBJJ keeps the essential principles of BJJ:

  • Positional hierarchy (guard, mount, side control, back control)
  • Leverage-based control over strength
  • Escapes, sweeps, and submissions from the ground

But it evolves those principles by adding:

  • Faster submission transitions and chaining attacks
  • More emphasis on pressure, control, and damage awareness
  • Integration of wrestling-style control and takedowns
  • Catch wrestling influences such as rides, cranks, and tighter pin control concepts (where allowed)
  • MMA-oriented positioning (including strikes awareness and defense)
  • Continuous flow training instead of pause-and-reset sport rounds

A key idea in CSBJJ is that grappling should not only be about “winning positions,” but about maintaining dominance under pressure and being able to finish fights efficiently, whether in sport, self-defense, or MMA contexts.

Training typically includes:

  • Live positional sparring (starting in disadvantageous positions)
  • Submission chains (linking multiple attacks together)
  • Takedown-to-submission integration
  • Pressure passing and top control development
  • Escape work under resistance
  • Transition drills between striking, clinch, and ground

At Phoenix Martial Arts Academy, CSBJJ is used as a bridge between traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a more complete combat system. It helps students:

  • Become more adaptable under pressure
  • Develop stronger top control and finishing ability
  • Transition smoothly between grappling and MMA contexts
  • Build real-world self-defense effectiveness
  • Improve conditioning through continuous, live resistance training

In simple terms, CSBJJ is BJJ evolved for modern fighting environments—keeping the efficiency of jiu-jitsu, but widening its scope to function beyond pure sport rules.
